Put this on the table. Put my phone to charge. Put out that light. Put me out of my bored misery!
Putting is boring. Put is the go-to verb for native and non-native speakers alike when a more precise one won't come to mind. If the English language were a computer game, "to put" would be the button allowing the protagonist to talk to a person, pick up an axe, wield it, use said axe on said person, open a door (with said axe!), etc. ad nauseam. In a game, it's convenient. In language, it ranges from unclear and inexact to boring and tiresome.
Place this on the table. Charge my phone... Put out that light. Sometimes it's unavoidable. But why not use it only when you have to?
